Revive Parkinson's: Your Partner in Recovery and Wellness

Discover innovative solutions to manage Parkinson’s disease effectively. Our product is designed to improve mobility, enhance daily living, and empower recovery for a brighter, healthier future.

10 Million Victims. 10 million patients suffer from the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world – it is thought that the number of people with this disease will double to 20 million by the year 2050. Witnessing the amassing victims of Parkinson’s Disease is egregious, given our current age of medicine and innovation.

Thoughts and ideas contain a value, however, it is the action that makes value.

We, as NeuroDex, have taken the initiative to aid with the life-altering Parkinson’s disease. Our device is built to help patients combat some of the key afflictions caused by Parkison’s including; bradykinesia, slow reaction times and prevalent, pessimistic mental health.

Of course, we, the innovators are merely high school students, with little to no medical knowledge. Nevertheless, with reliable research and first-hand interviews with medical professionals, we’ve come to a concrete solution: to engineer a hand-held device that can improve a patient’s reaction time and uplift their state of mind, while enhancing the dexterity of the muscle phalanges.

What is NeuroDex? A New Era in Parkinson’s Recovery

The NeuroDex device uses interactive LEDs and touch sensors to engage users in activities that improve fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and response times. It offers two modes: one for reaction-based challenges and another for playing musical patterns. Real-time feedback and difficulty adjustments make it suitable for varied needs, promoting dopamine production and recovery in a fun, therapeutic way.

The device is designed to be highly portable and user-friendly, making it an excellent addition to therapy sessions, classrooms, or even home use. Its durable build ensures long-lasting functionality, while the customizable settings allow therapists and caregivers to tailor activities to individual needs. By integrating cutting-edge technology with therapeutic principles, the NeuroDex device bridges the gap between rehabilitation and play, fostering motivation and consistent engagement among users of all ages.

Our Journey: Rags to Riches

The NeuroDex team formed through a shared goal of addressing the challenges faced by Parkinson’s patients, particularly those resistant to traditional therapies. This stemmed from the common denominator; our grandparents. By experiencing the
resistance and hesitancy towards modern medicine and technology, that the elderly exhibit, we came to our conclusion.

Why blindly forsake the older, knowledgeable population in hopes of propelling the so-called, “growth” of the newer generation? We find it non-inclusive and ignorant of the current world and have taken it upon ourselves to make change. Although the elderly may be too old and weary to take upon strenuous tasks, they can, however, contribute to society as individuals who have attained enlightenment, from their experiences throughout life.

Milestones of Innovation

We have made significant progress in advancing the device from concept to functional prototype by achieving the following milestones:

1. Hardware Development: Five touch sensors and corresponding LEDs have been integrated successfully, with redundancy removed for one sensor to improve efficiency.

2. Software Implementation: Randomization algorithms for Option A are fully functional, and music synchronization for Option B is implemented. The touch sensor 6 is responsible for switching between the modes and options

3. Improved Features: The LED-finger mapping is finalized for precise user feedback, and songs for Option B are being expanded to include multiple melodies.

4. User-Centric Design: The interface has been refined based on user feedback, ensuring accessibility for Parkinson’s patients with varying motor abilities.

Technology Tailored for Recovery

The innovation has been validated through innumerable stages of prototyping and testing. The core functionality of the device was tested using Arduino components to ensure the seamless interaction between LEDs and touch sensors.

Extensive trials confirmed the responsiveness of sensors and the randomization of LED lighting, essential for Option A. For Option B, the musical synchronization was validated by successfully integrating different song patterns, starting with “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” and other simple songs that contained the 5 most used musical notes (which are C, D, E, G and A). With exams closing in, and time ticking by, the pressure was immense with all the insurmountable errors, recoding and debugging.

However, with perseverance, the end product was finalised. As for medical accuracy, the team undertook comprehensive research starting from medical research papers published by board-certified Neurologists to meeting and inquiring doctors themselves. Feedback from caregivers and doctors helped refine the usability and engagement levels of the device. The only obstruction between publishing and copyrighting our device is testing.

Our team is yet to test the device’s ability to address both reflex training and dopamine stimulation through gamified therapy and we plan to gather quantitative data on motor skill improvement, in the future.
